Description
Donkey Tail – A Playful Succulent for Your Indoor Oasis
Overview
The Donkey Tail (Sedum morganianum), also known as Burro’s Tail, is a popular succulent recognized for its unique trailing stems adorned with fleshy, bead-like leaves. This charming plant is perfect for hanging baskets or high shelves where its beautiful, cascading foliage can be fully appreciated. The plant is not only visually appealing but also easy to care for, making it an excellent choice for both novice and experienced plant enthusiasts.
Plant Care
- Light: The plant thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, it’s best to avoid harsh, midday sun which can scorch its leaves.
- Water: Like most succulents, the Donkey Tail prefers to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry, and ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.
- Humidity: This succulent is well-suited to dry indoor environments and does not require high humidity levels. In fact, it’s quite tolerant of the average household humidity.
- Temperature: The Donkey Tail prefers warm temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C) and should be protected from frost. It can be moved outdoors during the summer months, provided it’s kept in a sheltered, partially shaded spot.
- Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix to keep your Donkey Tail healthy. Adding perlite or sand to standard potting soil can improve drainage if needed.
- Fertilizer: Feed your Donkey Tail once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding during the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows.
- Propagation: The Donkey Tail is easy to propagate through stem cuttings or by gently removing and planting its fallen leaves. Allow the cut ends to dry and callous over before placing them in well-draining soil.
Special Notes
- Handling: The leaves of the succulent are delicate and can easily fall off if the plant is handled too much. Place it in a location where it won’t be disturbed.
- Decorative Uses: This succulent’s unique trailing growth habit makes it a fantastic choice for hanging baskets, creating a dramatic effect as the stems grow longer.
The Donkey Tail is a wonderful addition to any indoor plant collection, bringing a touch of whimsy and greenery to your space with minimal effort.
